When they finish talking, Percy heads back to cabin eleven and meets Luke, who explains that his dad is Hermes. She went there on a field trip with Luke and other year-rounders during the winter solstice and everything seemed normal then, but lately, the weather has been strange as if the gods are fighting. She reveals that Mount Olympus hangs above the Empire State Building.

Percy asks Annabeth about the summer solstice, something he heard both Chiron and her talk about, but Annabeth explains she does not know details, only that something major is wrong on Mount Olympus right now.

She says the only way Percy is going to be given permission to leave right now is if he is assigned a quest. She shows him a necklace she has, with one bead carved with a special symbol representing each of the years she has been there. The camp's borders are sealed to keep both monsters and mortals out. Percy asks if he is stuck there forever, and Annabeth explains that some kids-like her-stay there year-round to keep safe from monsters, while others only stay for the summer. She says Percy's dad may send a sign to claim him, and that is the only way they will know for sure who he is. She tells Percy that his father is not dead-rather, he is one of the Olympians, which makes Percy half-god. Percy is perturbed and wants to go home, but Annabeth tell him he is home, home at the only place that is safe for half-humans like them. As they finish the tour, Annabeth tells Percy he needs to talk to the Oracle, but does not explain what the Oracle is. Any unclaimed member of the Legion is placed on Probatio until they achieve some kind of great task and they are claimed by their parent.Everyone in the camp hears about the bathroom incident quickly, and everyone stares at Percy as he and Annabeth continue their tour. However, by tradition when a member of the Legion turns sixteen, they are considered a man/woman and are normally claimed on this day. From then on, Claiming became a common occurrence at Camp Half-Blood, with new campers normally being claimed at the campfire.Īt Camp Jupiter, the gods don't interact with their children or legacies as much as their Greek aspects do. However, after the war was over, the minor gods and their children were given cabins. Many unclaimed demigods or demigods born from a minor god felt neglected by their parents and by Camp Half-Blood and turned away from the Olympians, eventually leading to the Second Olympian War. Though they may not claim them in order to keep them safe, as once a demigods learns who they are, they may begin to attract monsters that wouldn't have noticed them before. This may be because even the gods loose track of all the children that they have with mortals. However many demigods are never claimed in their lives, even after arriving at Camp Half-Blood. At Camp Half-Blood, being claimed is considered a great honor and they use this knowledge to sort you into the cabin of your godly parent. This was a sign that the demigod child was a son or daughter of a certain god.

Whenever gods have a child with a human, a god has the choice to claim that child or not. At Camp Jupiter and Camp Asgard, claiming is a more complicated process. At Camp Half-Blood, once a camper has shown some amount of their godly parents power or skill, that god or goddess will claim them as their own child. Claiming occurs when a god acknowledges a demigod as one of their own children, usually by sending a symbol of their power next their child.
